According to the Gospel of John, six stone jars stood at the wedding in Cana.
John 2 describes Jesus’s first sign: after the wine runs out, Jesus tells servants to fill six large stone water jars. Each jar could hold between 20 and 30 measures, a substantial quantity. Jesus then instructs the servants to draw from them and take the liquid to the master of the feast, who discovers that it is wine.
The story is unique to John; the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—do not record the wedding at Cana. John calls the event a “sign,” linking the miracle to the revelation of Jesus’s glory and the strengthening of his disciples’ faith. Cana is generally identified with a site in Galilee, although its exact historical location remains debated. The passage also names Jesus’s mother but does not call her Mary in the narrative itself.
