According to the Gospel of John, at which pool did Jesus heal a man who had been ill for 38 years?

The story behind the answer

According to the Gospel of John, Jesus healed the long-ill man at the Pool of Bethesda.

John 5:1–9 places the encounter at a pool in Jerusalem surrounded by five porticoes. The man says he has been ill for thirty-eight years. Jesus tells him to rise, take up his mat, and walk, making the healing a major sign in John’s narrative.

The episode produces a dispute because it occurs on the Sabbath. Religious authorities object to the healed man carrying his mat, while the story develops John’s themes of Jesus’ authority and work associated with the Father.

Some manuscripts and translations use the name Bethesda, while others read Bethzatha or Bethsaida. The Pool of Siloam belongs to a different healing story later in John, involving a man born blind.
