According to the Book of Exodus, Moses's mother was Jochebed.
Exodus identifies Jochebed as a daughter of Levi who married Amram, also from the tribe of Levi. Their children were Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. She gave birth to Moses during the period when Pharaoh had ordered Hebrew baby boys to be thrown into the Nile.
To protect him, Jochebed hid Moses for three months. She then placed him in a waterproofed basket among the reeds beside the Nile. Moses's sister watched nearby, and Pharaoh's daughter found the child. Through Miriam's intervention, Jochebed was hired to nurse Moses before he was raised in Pharaoh's household.
Jochebed is sometimes confused with Miriam, Moses's sister, because both women play important roles in his infancy story. Exodus names Jochebed as his mother, while Miriam is the older sister who watches the basket. The related biblical genealogies also connect the family to Levi, one of Jacob's sons.
