According to Luke’s Gospel, how old was Jesus when his parents found him teaching in the Jerusalem Temple?

The story behind the answer

According to Luke’s Gospel, Jesus was twelve years old when his parents found him teaching in the Jerusalem Temple.

Luke 2:41–52 says that Mary and Joseph traveled to Jerusalem for Passover each year. When Jesus was twelve, he stayed behind after the festival while his parents began the return journey. They eventually found him among teachers in the Temple, listening and asking questions.

The episode is commonly called the Finding in the Temple or Jesus among the doctors. It is the only childhood episode of Jesus between his infancy narratives and the beginning of his public ministry. Luke presents the scene as an early sign of Jesus’ unusual wisdom and of his distinctive relationship with God.

The passage does not say that Jesus was formally ordained or that he delivered a sermon there. It describes a conversation with religious teachers, followed by his return to Nazareth with Mary and Joseph.
