According to legend, what three-leaf plant did Saint Patrick use to explain the Trinity?

The story behind the answer

According to legend, Saint Patrick used a shamrock to explain the Christian Trinity.

The story says that Patrick showed a three-leafed plant to illustrate how the Father, Son and Holy Spirit could be understood as three persons within one God. The shamrock consequently became one of the most recognizable symbols associated with Ireland and Saint Patrick’s Day.

The precise plant meant by the traditional word shamrock is uncertain. Irish sources have associated it with several small three-leafed plants, including white clover and lesser trefoil. This botanical uncertainty does not change the cultural meaning of the symbol.

The Trinity story is a later tradition, not an episode recorded in Patrick’s surviving writings. A four-leaf clover is also different: it is a rare variation associated with luck, while the Saint Patrick’s Day symbol is specifically a three-leafed shamrock.
