According to Genesis, Esau received lentil stew from Jacob in exchange for his birthright.
Genesis 25 describes Esau returning from the field exhausted and asking Jacob for some of the red food he was cooking. Jacob agrees only after Esau sells him his birthright, the status and privileges associated with being the firstborn son. Esau then swears an oath and eats and drinks before leaving.
The passage is the source of Esau’s alternate name, Edom, which is connected in the narrative with the reddish food and the red appearance associated with Edom. The episode also introduces the rivalry between the twins Jacob and Esau, which continues through later Genesis stories.
The food is sometimes called a “mess of pottage” in older English translations. That phrase refers to the same cooked dish, generally understood as lentil stew, not to a separate kind of bread or beverage.
