According to Genesis, how long was Noah’s Ark said to be?
Answer
300 cubits
Answer
300 cubits
According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark was said to be 300 cubits long.
Genesis 6:15 gives the Ark’s three main measurements: 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width, and 30 cubits in height. A cubit was an ancient unit based roughly on the length of a forearm, so its exact modern equivalent is uncertain. Using common estimates, the Ark would have been about 137 metres long, though proposed conversions vary.
The proportions make the Ark much longer than it was wide or tall. They have often been compared with the proportions of large barges, because a broad, box-like hull can provide stability. Genesis does not describe a pointed bow, sails, oars, or a steering system.
The 300-cubit figure is a biblical specification, not a measurement verified by archaeology. Later artists and builders have therefore produced models at different scales, depending on which cubit length they use.
