According to Exodus 18, Moses’s second son was named Eliezer.
The name appears when Moses’s father-in-law, Jethro, visits him in the wilderness after the Israelites leave Egypt. Moses explains that he named the child Eliezer because the God of his ancestors had helped him and rescued him from Pharaoh’s sword.
Eliezer’s older brother was Gershom, whose name is also connected with Moses’s experience as a foreigner in Midian. The two names are easy to mix up because both sons are mentioned in the same short passage about Moses’s family.
Exodus does not provide a detailed biography of Eliezer. Later biblical genealogies mention descendants associated with him, but the Exodus narrative mainly preserves the reason Moses gave for his son’s name.
