According to Exodus 16, the Israelites called the bread-like food found in the wilderness manna.
The story says that a fine, flaky substance appeared on the ground in the morning after the dew lifted. The Israelites asked, “What is it?” and the name manna is connected with that question. Moses explained that it was the food God had provided for them.
The Israelites were instructed to gather only what they needed for each day, with an additional portion collected before the Sabbath. The account also says that manna could be prepared as food and tasted like wafers made with honey.
Manna is not the same as the quail that appeared in the evening. Both foods occur in the wilderness narrative, but manna is the distinctive bread-like provision associated with the morning.
