According to 2 Samuel, what city did David make the capital of his kingdom?

The story behind the answer

According to 2 Samuel, David made Jerusalem the capital of his kingdom.

After becoming king over all Israel, David captured the Jebusite stronghold of Jerusalem and established his royal city there. The site is described as the City of David. Its position helped David unite the northern and southern tribal territories under one political center.

David later brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, strengthening the city’s religious importance as well as its political role. His son Solomon built the First Temple there, making Jerusalem the central sanctuary of the kingdom in the biblical narrative.

Hebron is an important mix-up because David first ruled Judah from that city and was later crowned king over all Israel there. Bethlehem was David’s birthplace, while Gibeah had been associated with Saul’s reign. Jerusalem became David’s capital only after his earlier period of rule from Hebron.
