YouTube created Shorts to compete with TikTok. The feature brought short, vertical, mobile-first videos into YouTube as platforms raced to attract audiences who enjoyed rapidly scrolling through brief clips.
YouTube announced an early Shorts beta in September 2020 and initially tested it in India. The first tools supported short videos of up to 15 seconds, along with features such as a multi-segment camera, speed controls, a timer, and access to music and audio. The service later expanded to additional countries and longer video limits.
Shorts is often compared with Instagram Reels and the now-defunct Vine, but TikTok was the principal competitor associated with its launch. Shorts also differed from TikTok by operating inside YouTube’s established ecosystem, connecting short-form viewing with subscriptions, long-form videos, search, and creator channels.
