George Harrison and business manager Denis O’Brien formed HandMade Films in 1978. The company’s immediate purpose was to rescue Monty Python’s Life of Brian after EMI Films withdrew its financing shortly before filming was due to begin.

Harrison was a devoted Monty Python fan and took an extraordinary financial risk: he helped fund the production by mortgaging his home, Friar Park. The film became a major success and established HandMade Films as an important British production and distribution company rather than a one-off financing venture.

HandMade later backed films including The Long Good Friday, Time Bandits and Withnail and I. Harrison’s involvement is sometimes confused with his work at Apple Corps or with other Beatles business figures such as Brian Epstein and Allen Klein, but neither of those men co-founded HandMade Films.
