With which artistic movement is Gaudí's work primarily associated?

The story behind the answer

With which artistic movement is Gaudí's work primarily associated? Modernisme.

Modernisme was Catalonia’s distinctive form of Art Nouveau, a late-19th- and early-20th-century movement that joined architecture with applied arts, craftsmanship, and cultural nationalism. Antoni Gaudí is widely regarded as its greatest master.

Gaudí’s buildings combine organic shapes, bold colour, ceramics, stained glass, wrought iron, and inventive structures. Casa Vicens, Palau Güell, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Park Güell, and the Sagrada Família all show different stages of his development within Modernisme. His style also absorbed Oriental, Neo-Mudéjar, Gothic Revival, and natural influences.

A common mix-up is calling every Gaudí building simply “Art Nouveau.” That is broadly understandable, but Modernisme is the more precise Catalan designation. Gothic Revival describes one important influence, especially visible in parts of the Sagrada Família, rather than the movement most closely associated with Gaudí overall.
