Wingz, the vehicle-for-hire company, was originally known as Tickengo.
Tickengo was founded in 2011 by Geoff Mathieux, Jeremie Romand, Fred Gomez, and Christof Baumbach. Its early concept was a ride-sharing platform that matched drivers and passengers traveling toward the same destination, before the modern industry had settled on its current terminology and business models.
In October 2011, Tickengo expanded the idea by allowing non-commercial drivers to accept posted ride requests even when they were not already headed to the passenger’s destination. That peer-to-peer model helped distinguish the company from conventional taxi dispatch services.
The company encountered regulatory resistance in California, receiving a cease-and-desist letter from the California Public Utilities Commission in 2012. After California formally created the Transportation Network Company category in 2013, Tickengo rebranded as Wingz in early 2014. Gett, Hailo, and Summon were different services, not earlier names for Wingz.
