Whose signature appears first on the engrossed Declaration of Independence?
Answer
John Hancock
Answer
John Hancock
John Hancock’s signature appears first on the engrossed Declaration of Independence.
Hancock was serving as president of the Second Continental Congress when the formal parchment was signed. His large, prominent signature became one of the document’s most recognizable features and helped produce the modern expression “put your John Hancock” for signing one’s name.
Hancock’s first position does not mean he wrote the Declaration. Thomas Jefferson was its principal drafter, while Hancock presided over Congress. Hancock was also a wealthy Massachusetts merchant and an important supporter of the revolutionary movement.
The document’s signing history is more complicated than popular images suggest. Although the Declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776, most historians believe most delegates signed the engrossed parchment on August 2, with others signing later. Hancock’s signature nevertheless occupies the first and most conspicuous place.
