Whose portrait appears on the obverse of the 2026 America250 Constitution quarter?

James Madison’s portrait appears on the obverse of the 2026 America250 Constitution quarter.

Madison is often called the “Father of the Constitution” because of his role in the Constitutional Convention, his contributions to the document’s design, and his later defense of ratification in the Federalist Papers. He also became the fourth president of the United States.

The quarter’s reverse depicts Independence Hall, where the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia. Its clocks show 2:50, a visual reference to the 250th anniversary represented by the coin program.

Madison is distinct from George Washington, who presided over the Constitutional Convention, and Thomas Jefferson, who is featured on the semiquincentennial Declaration of Independence quarter. The portraits therefore connect different founding documents with the figures most closely associated with them.
