Who wrote the stage sketch Dinner for One?
Answer
Lauri Wylie
Answer
Lauri Wylie
Lauri Wylie wrote the stage sketch Dinner for One.
Wylie was a British actor and author who first presented the sketch in his London stage revue En Ville Ce Soir in 1934. The piece later became famous under the alternate title The 90th Birthday, although its German television success far exceeded its original British stage reputation.
The sketch follows Miss Sophie’s 90th birthday dinner, during which her butler James serves imaginary guests and drinks their toasts himself. Wylie’s writing established the repeated routine, physical comedy and increasingly drunken performance that make the sketch instantly recognizable.
People sometimes confuse the writer with the performers or television production staff. Freddie Frinton played James, May Warden played Miss Sophie, and Heinz Dunkhase directed the NDR recording. Wylie, however, was the author of the underlying stage work. He died in 1951, before the 1963 television version turned the sketch into a European New Year’s Eve classic.
