Who wrote the Shahnameh, the Persian epic that mentions King Jamshid’s Nowruz?

The story behind the answer

Ferdowsi wrote the Shahnameh, the Persian epic that mentions King Jamshid’s Nowruz.

Abu al-Qasim Ferdowsi, commonly known simply as Ferdowsi, composed the Shahnameh around the turn of the 11th century. The enormous poem recounts the legendary and historical past of Iran, including stories of kings, heroes, battles, and the mythic ruler Jamshid.

In the Jamshid story, the king’s arrival in a splendid jeweled throne is connected with a day of celebration and renewal, which tradition identifies with Nowruz. This literary account helped preserve and popularize the festival’s mythological association with Jamshid.

Ferdowsi is sometimes confused with later Persian poets such as Rumi or Hafez. Those writers were influential in Persian literature, but the Shahnameh is Ferdowsi’s defining work.
