Answer
Frank Wedekind
Answer
Frank Wedekind
Frank Wedekind wrote the plays Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box, which inspired the 1929 film.
Frank Wedekind was a German playwright and actor whose work often challenged conventional morality and social expectations. Earth Spirit, first performed in 1895, and Pandora’s Box, first performed in 1904, together form the Lulu cycle. The plays follow Lulu, a sexually independent and socially disruptive figure.
G. W. Pabst’s film Pandora’s Box adapted material from both plays and made Louise Brooks famous in the role of Lulu. The movie therefore belongs to the modern European theater and cinema tradition rather than to a direct ancient Greek adaptation.
Wedekind’s title invokes the Pandora myth as a cultural metaphor. In his work, the name suggests the release of destructive forces and the anxiety surrounding desire, gender, and social control. The adaptation changed details, but retained the central Lulu character and the title’s allusion.
