Who wrote the play Pandora's Box that forms part two of the Lulu drama?

The story behind the answer

Frank Wedekind wrote the play Pandora's Box, the second part of his Lulu drama.

Wedekind was a German playwright whose work challenged conventional ideas about sexuality, morality, and respectable society. His Lulu cycle consists of Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box, with the character Lulu at the center of both plays. Pandora's Box was published in 1904.

The plays attracted controversy because of their sexual themes and their attacks on hypocrisy. They also became the basis for later adaptations, most famously G. W. Pabst's 1929 film and Alban Berg's opera Lulu. These adaptations helped preserve Wedekind's work in international cultural memory.

Wedekind's title borrows the familiar mythological image but changes its function. Instead of presenting the ancient first woman, Pandora's Box uses Lulu to explore modern anxieties about desire, power, social status, and punishment. The connection is symbolic, not a literal version of Hesiod's narrative.
