Lee was born Nelle Harper Lee in Monroeville, Alabama, in 1926. Her novel was published on July 11, 1960, and quickly became a major American literary success. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961 and drew on Lee’s observations of family, neighbors, race, and class in the Depression-era South.

The novel’s fictional setting and characters have autobiographical connections. Scout Finch resembles Lee in some ways, while Dill Harris was partly inspired by Lee’s childhood friend Truman Capote. Lee’s father, Amasa Coleman Lee, was an Alabama lawyer, helping inform the courtroom and moral themes surrounding Atticus Finch.

A common mix-up is confusing Lee with Capote, who was her close friend and later wrote In Cold Blood. Lee also published Go Set a Watchman in 2015, but To Kill a Mockingbird remains her defining novel.
