Who wrote the novel "Pride and Prejudice"?

The story behind the answer

The author of the novel Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen.

Austen wrote the novel in the early 19th century, and it was first published anonymously in 1813. Its central character, Elizabeth Bennet, is an intelligent but initially prejudiced young woman whose judgments are challenged by her changing understanding of Fitzwilliam Darcy. Darcy, meanwhile, must overcome his own pride and social assumptions.

The novel is set among England’s landed gentry, where marriage is closely tied to money, inheritance, family reputation, and social position. Because the Bennet family has no male heir, the family estate is entailed away from the daughters, increasing the pressure on them to marry securely. Austen turns these serious economic constraints into sharp social comedy through dialogue, irony, and memorable characters such as Mr. Bennet, Mrs. Bennet, and Mr. Collins.

Readers sometimes confuse Austen with Mary Shelley, George Eliot, or Charlotte Brontë because all are prominent women writers associated with English literature. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, and Charlotte Brontë wrote Jane Eyre. Pride and Prejudice remains Austen’s best-known novel and one of the most frequently adapted works in English literature.
