Who wrote the Narnia books?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia.

The Chronicles of Narnia is a seven-volume fantasy series published between 1950 and 1956. Its stories describe the fictional world of Narnia, where talking animals, magical creatures, children from Earth, and the lion Aslan are central figures. The series begins with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in its original publication order.

Lewis wrote the books for children, but they became widely read by adults as well. The stories draw on mythology, fairy tales, medieval romance, and Christian themes. Their imaginative structure has led readers to debate symbolism and reading order, although the books remain accessible as adventure stories in their own right.

J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis’s friend and fellow Oxford scholar, wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings instead. The two authors are often paired because of their friendship and shared interest in myth, but Narnia belongs to Lewis.
