Who wrote the medieval romance Parzival, one of the major German Grail narratives?

The story behind the answer

Wolfram von Eschenbach wrote Parzival, one of the major German Grail narratives.

Wolfram composed the Middle High German epic in the early 13th century, probably between about 1200 and 1210. The poem adapts and expands material associated with Chrétien de Troyes, while developing its own characters, theology, geography, and Grail mythology.

Its central hero begins as a naïve young knight and gradually learns the responsibilities of compassion, faith, and courtly conduct. The work also tells the story of Gawan and places the Grail within a distinctive community of guardians.

Parzival became one of the most influential medieval German romances. Richard Wagner later used it as a principal source for his opera Parsifal, though Wagner’s interpretation differs substantially from Wolfram’s poem.
