Who wrote the Japanese dystopian novel Battle Royale?

The story behind the answer

Koushun Takami wrote the Japanese dystopian novel Battle Royale.

The novel was first published in Japan in 1999. It follows a class of junior-high students forced by a totalitarian government to fight one another on an isolated island until only one survivor remains. The premise explores state violence, fear, coercion, and the breakdown of trust among young people.

Battle Royale was Takami’s debut novel and won a competition sponsored by the Japanese publisher Ohta Publishing. Its controversial subject matter initially complicated publication, but the book became a major success and inspired adaptations in manga and film.

A frequent mix-up is attributing the novel to director Kinji Fukasaku, who directed the 2000 film adaptation. Fukasaku did not write the novel. The author is Koushun Takami, the pen name of journalist and translator Hitoshi Takami.
