Who wrote 'The Day of the Triffids'?

The story behind the answer

Who wrote The Day of the Triffids? John Wyndham. The 1951 post-apocalyptic science-fiction novel was written by the English author John Wyndham and is one of his best-known works.

The story begins after a strange meteor shower blinds most of the people who witnessed it. Society then faces a second threat from triffids: tall, mobile, venomous plants capable of killing humans with a stinging whip-like structure. Biologist Bill Masen survives because his eyes are bandaged in hospital during the disaster, giving him a viewpoint on the collapse that most characters lack.

Wyndham’s novel explores survival, social organization, technology, and the fragility of civilization. Although the book is often remembered as a monster story, its interest lies equally in the competing plans survivors develop for rebuilding society. Wyndham had published earlier work under several pen names, but The Day of the Triffids was his first novel published under the name John Wyndham. It is sometimes confused with later film and television adaptations, which change important plot details.
