Who wrote the children's classic 'Goodnight Moon'?

The story behind the answer

Margaret Wise Brown wrote the children's classic Goodnight Moon.

Published in 1947, the book was illustrated by Clement Hurd and follows a young rabbit's quiet bedtime ritual. The rhyming text bids goodnight to familiar objects in a room, including a red balloon, kittens, socks, a bowl of mush, and the moon outside the window.

Brown drew on her interest in child development and on real bedtime rituals. The book's original working title was Goodnight Room, and Hurd's rabbits were partly chosen because he found rabbits easier to draw than human figures.

A common mix-up is crediting Hurd as the author because his illustrations are so memorable. He was the illustrator; Brown wrote the text. The book initially sold slowly, but became a major bestseller during the postwar baby boom.
