Colting is a Swedish publisher and writer who released 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye in 2009 under the pseudonym John David California. The novel presents itself as a continuation of The Catcher in the Rye, with Holden Caulfield reimagined as a 76-year-old man who leaves a nursing home.

The pseudonym initially helped create confusion about the author's identity. Promotional material described John David California as a Swedish-American writer, but court filings identified the author as Fredrik Colting. Colting argued that his book should be viewed as commentary or parody rather than merely an unauthorized sequel.

J. D. Salinger's lawsuit nevertheless led to a U.S. court order blocking the book's publication, advertising, and distribution in the United States. The case made Colting's identity almost as notable as the novel itself. David Shields and Shane Salerno later co-wrote a biography of Salinger, but neither wrote this fan sequel.
