Who wrote the 1963 Newbery Medal-winning book 'A Wrinkle in Time'?

The story behind the answer

Madeleine L'Engle wrote the 1963 Newbery Medal-winning book A Wrinkle in Time.

First published in 1962, the science-fantasy novel follows Meg Murry, her brother Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe as they travel through space and time to rescue Meg's missing father. Its central conflict sets love, light, and moral courage against a force of darkness known as the Black Thing.

L'Engle wrote the novel between 1959 and 1960, but publishers initially rejected it repeatedly because its mixture of science fiction, spirituality, and serious ideas about evil was considered difficult to classify. The book was also unusual for featuring a teenage girl as the central hero of a science-fiction adventure.

A common mix-up is the date: the novel appeared in 1962, while it received the Newbery Medal in 1963. The medal recognized L'Engle's contribution to American children's literature, and the book became the first volume in her interconnected Time Quintet.
