Who wrote the 1929 German film Pandora’s Box?

The story behind the answer

Ladislaus Vajda wrote the 1929 German film Pandora’s Box.

Pandora’s Box, or Die Büchse der Pandora, is a German silent film directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst. Its screenplay was written by Ladislaus Vajda and is based on Frank Wedekind’s plays Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box. The film centers on Lulu, a sexually independent woman whose relationships lead to violence and tragedy.

Louise Brooks played Lulu in the best-known performance associated with the film. Her bobbed hairstyle and expressive acting later helped make the movie an enduring work of late silent cinema. The production was made during the Weimar period, a major era in German film history.

The film is often confused with later movies sharing the Pandora title. Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou were important figures in German cinema, but neither wrote this screenplay. Vajda later became known for screenwriting and directing work in European cinema.
