Who wrote the 1925 novel "Mrs Dalloway"?
Answer
Virginia Woolf
Answer
Virginia Woolf
Virginia Woolf wrote the 1925 novel "Mrs Dalloway." The book follows one day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, an upper-class woman in post-First World War London who is preparing to host an evening party.
Woolf published the novel on 14 May 1925 through the Hogarth Press, the publishing house she operated with her husband, Leonard Woolf. Its working title was "The Hours," and the novel grew partly from Woolf's short stories "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" and the unfinished "The Prime Minister."
The novel is celebrated for its stream-of-consciousness technique, which moves fluidly between Clarissa's thoughts and the perspectives of other characters. It also connects Clarissa's apparently ordinary preparations with the trauma experienced by Septimus Warren Smith, a shell-shocked war veteran. A common mix-up is confusing Woolf's novel with Katherine Mansfield's stories or with E. M. Forster's and D. H. Lawrence's separate modernist-era works.
