Who wore number 17 for the New York Red Bulls in the 2011 season?

The story behind the answer

Juan Agudelo wore number 17 for the New York Red Bulls in the 2011 season.

Agudelo was a Colombian-born American forward who came through the Red Bulls Academy and became one of Major League Soccer’s youngest notable homegrown players. He had already made his MLS debut for New York late in the 2010 season, then entered the 2011 campaign wearing the club’s No. 17 shirt.

His 2011 season began memorably: Agudelo scored the only goal in New York’s 1–0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC in the MLS season opener. He finished the campaign with six league goals and also represented the United States senior national team, scoring on his international debut in 2010.

A common mix-up is confusing Agudelo’s club number with the numbers worn by other Red Bulls forwards or with his changing shirt numbers after leaving New York. The 2011 Red Bulls roster specifically lists Agudelo as No. 17; he later moved to Chivas USA in 2012.
