Who won the men’s marathon at the 2012 London Olympics?

Stephen Kiprotich won the men’s marathon at the 2012 London Olympics.

Kiprotich of Uganda won the Olympic race on August 12, 2012, in 2:08:01. He finished ahead of Kenya’s Abel Kirui and Wilson Kipsang, becoming Uganda’s first Olympic medalist in athletics since 1996 and its first Olympic champion since 1972.

The race began and finished in central London, with the course passing landmarks including The Mall and Buckingham Palace. Kiprotich made his decisive move late in the race and held on for the gold medal.

Kipchoge is often associated with Olympic marathon success because he won gold in 2016 and 2020. However, the 2012 men’s Olympic marathon belonged to Kiprotich, who represented Uganda rather than Kenya.
