Who won the men’s marathon at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Mamo Wolde won the men’s marathon at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Wolde, representing Ethiopia, finished in 2:20:26 to claim the gold medal. Japan’s Kenji Kimihara took silver, while New Zealand’s Mike Ryan won bronze. The race was held at Mexico City’s high altitude, about 2,240 metres above sea level, which made endurance especially demanding.

Wolde had also won silver in the 10,000 metres at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. His 1968 marathon victory continued Ethiopia’s remarkable Olympic marathon tradition after Abebe Bikila’s victories in 1960 and 1964.

A common mix-up is confusing Wolde with Bikila, who was the reigning Olympic champion but did not win in Mexico City. Wolde remained a major Ethiopian distance runner and later earned bronze in the marathon at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
