Answer
Thomas Hicks
Answer
Thomas Hicks
Thomas Hicks won the men’s marathon at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics.
Hicks, representing the United States, officially won the race in approximately 3:28:53. The event was held on August 30, 1904, in severe heat and over rough, dusty roads, making it one of the most difficult Olympic marathons in history.
The race is remembered for controversy. American Fred Lorz reached the finish first after receiving a ride in a car for part of the course, then withdrew his claim when the assistance was revealed. Hicks also received strychnine and brandy from his handlers during the race, practices that would not be permitted under modern rules.
Hicks therefore remained the official champion, while Lorz was disqualified. Arthur Newton finished third, and Albert Corey was credited with second place in some historical accounts.
