Lizzo won the 2020 Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts.” The award was presented at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards on January 26, 2020, after the song became one of the defining pop hits of the previous year.
“Truth Hurts” was originally released in 2017, but a later surge in popularity made it eligible for the 2020 ceremony. A remix incorporating a popular internet meme helped propel the track to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where it eventually spent seven weeks at number one. The song’s direct breakup message and instantly recognizable opening helped it become a cultural catchphrase.
The category’s other nominees included Beyoncé’s “Spirit,” Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings,” and Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down.” Lizzo was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Truth Hurts,” but won Best Pop Solo Performance.
