Who won the famous 1985 World Snooker Championship final, decided 18–17?

The story behind the answer

Dennis Taylor won the famous 1985 World Snooker Championship final, defeating Steve Davis 18–17.

The final was played at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and became one of snooker's best-known matches. Davis led 8–0 and later 17–16, but Taylor recovered to level the match and win the deciding frame. The final black of that frame secured Taylor's only world title.

The conclusion was watched by a huge television audience in the United Kingdom and became an enduring sporting memory. Taylor's distinctive upside-down glasses, worn because of his unusual sighting position, added to the visual identity of the occasion.

The scoreline is sometimes remembered incorrectly as 18–16 because the match was played over a best-of-35-frame format. The champion needed 18 frames, while Davis's 17 frames show that the contest went to its maximum possible length.
