Answer
Dominic Thiem
Answer
Dominic Thiem
Dominic Thiem won the 2020 US Open men’s singles title after defeating Alexander Zverev in a five-set final.
Thiem lost the first two sets 6–2 and 6–4, then rallied to win the next three 6–4, 6–3, 7–6(8–6). The final lasted four hours and one minute and was the first US Open men’s final decided by a fifth-set tiebreak.
The victory gave the Austrian his first Grand Slam singles title. He became the first man born in the 1990s to win a major singles championship and the first player since 2004 to recover from two sets down in a Grand Slam final.
The pandemic shaped the tournament: the event was played without spectators, Rafael Nadal withdrew, and Novak Djokovic was defaulted in the fourth round. Those unusual circumstances do not change the champion—Thiem defeated Zverev for the title.
