Who won the 2014 Boston Marathon, becoming the first American men’s champion since 1983?

Meb Keflezighi won the 2014 Boston Marathon, becoming the first American men’s champion since 1983.

Keflezighi finished in 2:08:37, holding off the field on a warm day. His victory came one year after the Boston Marathon bombings, so the result carried exceptional emotional significance for the city and for American distance running.

He was born in Eritrea and became a United States citizen in 1998. Keflezighi had already won an Olympic silver medal in the marathon at Athens in 2004.

The previous American men’s Boston winner was Greg Meyer, who triumphed in 1983. Keflezighi’s win ended a 31-year gap and made him the first American man to win since the race adopted its modern mass-participation era.
