Who won the 2008 FedEx Cup?
Answer
Vijay Singh
Answer
Vijay Singh
Vijay Singh won the 2008 FedEx Cup.
Singh secured the season-long championship during the second FedEx Cup Playoffs, held from August 21 through September 28, 2008. The playoffs consisted of The Barclays, the Deutsche Bank Championship, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.
His victory was effectively clinched after he won the first two playoff events. Singh entered the Tour Championship with an insurmountable points advantage, provided he completed all four rounds without disqualification. He did so, finishing the season with 125,101 FedEx Cup points and collecting the $10 million champion’s bonus.
Camilo Villegas won the 2008 Tour Championship itself, defeating Sergio García in a playoff, but that tournament victory was separate from the season-long FedEx Cup title. This distinction is the main reason the answer can be confused: the event winner and the FedEx Cup champion were different golfers that year. Tiger Woods led the regular-season standings but missed the playoffs after knee surgery.
