Who won baseball's 2001 World Series, beating the New York Yankees 4 games to 3?
Answer
Arizona Diamondbacks
Answer
Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona Diamondbacks won baseball’s 2001 World Series, beating the New York Yankees 4 games to 3. It was the franchise’s first championship, only its fourth season in Major League Baseball.
The Diamondbacks took the first two games in Phoenix, but the Yankees won three straight in New York to move ahead 3–2. Arizona forced a deciding Game 7, played on November 4 at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix. The Diamondbacks won 3–2 when Luis Gonzalez hit a walk-off single against Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The championship was especially notable because New York was seeking a fourth consecutive World Series title and had won the previous three championships. Arizona’s pitching duo of Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling shared the Series Most Valuable Player award after dominating throughout the postseason. Johnson also won the National League Cy Young Award in 2001, while Schilling finished second in that vote.
A common mix-up is confusing the 2001 champion with the 2000 World Series winner: the Yankees defeated the New York Mets in 2000. The Diamondbacks later returned to the World Series in 2023, but lost to the Texas Rangers.
