The Oakland A’s won the 1973 World Series, defeating the New York Mets four games to three. Oakland became baseball’s champion after winning the deciding Game 7 at home, 5–2.
The Series ran from October 13 through October 21, 1973. The Mets took a 3–2 lead after winning Games 4 and 5, including a shutout in Game 5, but Oakland rallied to win Game 6 and force the deciding contest. Ken Holtzman earned the Game 7 victory, while Reggie Jackson was named World Series Most Valuable Player.
The championship was Oakland’s second consecutive World Series title, following its victory over the Cincinnati Reds in 1972. The Athletics also won again in 1974, completing a three-year championship run.
The team is officially called the Oakland Athletics, but “Oakland A’s” is the standard contemporary shorthand and is a fully recognizable answer. The franchise later moved to other cities, but the 1973 champion was based in Oakland.
