Who won back-to-back Cy Young Awards for the Orioles?
Answer
Jim Palmer
Answer
Jim Palmer
Jim Palmer won back-to-back American League Cy Young Awards for the Baltimore Orioles in 1975 and 1976. He had already won the award in 1973, giving him three AL Cy Youngs in four seasons.
Palmer was the centerpiece of Baltimore’s dominant pitching staff during the 1970s. In 1975, he went 23–11 with a 2.09 ERA, then followed with a 22–13 record and a 2.51 ERA in 1976. His durability and control made him one of the era’s most dependable starters.
A common mix-up is assuming the Orioles’ Cy Young history belongs only to Palmer. Baltimore also had Mike Cuellar win in 1969, Mike Flanagan in 1979, and Steve Stone in 1980. Palmer, however, remains the only Oriole to win the award in consecutive seasons.
Palmer spent his entire 19-year major-league career with Baltimore, winning 268 games and helping the Orioles capture three World Series titles. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
