Who won a record seven National League MVP awards?

The story behind the answer

Barry Bonds won a record seven National League MVP awards.

Bonds earned his first NL MVP in 1990 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, then won again in 1992 and 1993. After joining the San Francisco Giants, he captured four consecutive awards from 2001 through 2004, producing the record total of seven.

His MVP run was part of an extraordinary career. Bonds combined elite power, plate discipline, speed and defense, eventually becoming MLB's career home-run leader with 762 and the single-season record holder with 73 homers in 2001. He also became the first player to reach both 500 home runs and 500 stolen bases.

A common mix-up is confusing the league record with the overall MVP record. Bonds' seven awards are specifically National League MVPs; the American League has its own history, and no player has matched Bonds' total in either league. His awards also span two franchises, unlike many players associated with one dominant team.
