Who witnessed the Wright brothers’ first powered flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903?

The story behind the answer

Five local men witnessed the Wright brothers’ first powered flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903.

The witnesses were Adam Etheridge, John T. Daniels, Will Dough, W. C. Brinkley, and Johnny Moore. They were local residents or workers who had been informed that the brothers planned to attempt a powered flight on December 17, 1903.

John T. Daniels, a member of the Kill Devil Hills Life-Saving Station, famously operated the camera that captured the best-known photograph of the first flight. The image shows the Wright Flyer just after leaving the launch rail, with Orville lying face down at the controls.

The event was not watched by a large crowd. Its small audience is one reason the achievement initially received limited public attention. The brothers later demonstrated their aircraft publicly, making the significance of the Kitty Hawk flights much more widely known.
