Who was the winning pitcher in George Brett's "Pine Tar" Game?

The story behind the answer

The winning pitcher in George Brett’s “Pine Tar” Game was Mike Armstrong of the Kansas City Royals.

On July 24, 1983, at Yankee Stadium, Brett hit a two-run home run off Yankees reliever Goose Gossage with two outs in the ninth inning, putting Kansas City ahead 5–4. Home-plate umpire Tim McClelland then ruled Brett out because the bat’s pine tar extended beyond the limit allowed under the rule at the time.

The Yankees initially appeared to win 4–3, but American League president Lee MacPhail upheld Kansas City’s protest and restored the home run. The game resumed on August 18 with the Royals leading 5–4 and only four outs remaining. George Frazier struck out Hal McRae, and Dan Quisenberry closed out New York for the save.

A common mix-up is to name Gossage, who was the losing pitcher, or Quisenberry, who recorded the save. The official winning-pitcher credit went to reliever Mike Armstrong, even though the decisive conclusion occurred weeks after the original game date.
