Who was the winning coach in Super Bowl 1?
Answer
Vince Lombardi
Answer
Vince Lombardi
Vince Lombardi was the winning coach in Super Bowl I, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 35–10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on January 15, 1967.
The game was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and matched the champions of the NFL and the rival American Football League. Lombardi’s Packers took control after halftime, turning a close 14–10 game into a decisive win. Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Super Bowl I was officially called the AFL–NFL World Championship Game at the time; the “Super Bowl” name became the official title later. The matchup is also sometimes confused with the first NFL championship game, but it was specifically the first championship contest between the two professional leagues.
Lombardi went on to coach Green Bay to victory in Super Bowl II as well. His legacy became so closely linked with championship football that the Super Bowl trophy was renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 1970, shortly after his death.
