Who was the wife of King Henry VII?
Answer
Elizabeth of York
Answer
Elizabeth of York
Elizabeth of York was the wife of King Henry VII, whom she married on 18 January 1486. Their marriage joined the rival royal houses of York and Lancaster after Henry's victory over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward IV, a Yorkist king, and Elizabeth Woodville. Her position gave Henry's new Tudor regime an important connection to the House of York, although Henry carefully presented his own authority as coming from conquest and hereditary right rather than solely from his wife's claim. The marriage helped reduce factional hostility and inspired the later Tudor rose, combining the red rose associated with Lancaster and the white rose associated with York.
The couple had several children, including Arthur, Prince of Wales, Margaret, later Queen of Scots, Henry VIII, and Mary, later Queen of France. Elizabeth died on 11 February 1503, shortly after childbirth, aged 37. Henry never remarried and died in 1509, leaving their surviving son to become Henry VIII.
