Who was the wife of Bharata?

The story behind the answer

Who was the wife of Bharata? Bharata’s wife was Mandavi.

Mandavi was a princess of Videha and the daughter of Kushadhvaja, the younger brother of King Janaka. She grew up in Mithila alongside Sita, Urmila, and her younger sister Shrutakirti. Because of these family ties, Mandavi is often grouped with the three other brides in the Ramayana’s royal marriage alliance.

After Rama’s svayamvara, King Dasharatha arranged marriages among his four sons and the four princesses: Rama with Sita, Bharata with Mandavi, Lakshmana with Urmila, and Shatrughna with Shrutakirti. Mandavi therefore became Bharata’s wife and princess of the Kosala royal family.

Mandavi has a smaller role in Valmiki’s Ramayana than Sita or the brothers, but later traditions emphasize her piety and endurance. She and Bharata are traditionally said to have had two sons, Taksha and Pushkala. The most common mix-up is pairing Bharata with Urmila; Urmila was Lakshmana’s wife, while Mandavi married Bharata.
