Who was the second pick overall in the 2017 NFL Draft?

The story behind the answer

Mitchell Trubisky was the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, selected by the Chicago Bears.

Chicago traded up from the third spot with the San Francisco 49ers to secure Trubisky, sending San Francisco the 67th and 111th overall selections plus a 2018 third-round pick. The move was a major draft-night surprise because Trubisky had started only 13 games at North Carolina, but the Bears viewed his arm strength, accuracy, mobility and potential as worth the aggressive trade.

The Cleveland Browns selected Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett first overall. San Francisco then moved down to third, where it chose Stanford defensive lineman Solomon Thomas. Trubisky was the first quarterback drafted that year, ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, who were both selected later in the first round.

A common mix-up is confusing the draft order with the eventual reputations of the quarterbacks. Mahomes and Watson later became major NFL stars, but neither was the second pick. The No. 2 selection officially belonged to Trubisky, a North Carolina quarterback who went on to make the Pro Bowl with Chicago in 2018.
